Learning About Cultures
Before the onset of the Holiday Season, the staff decided that this would be a good time to take some moments with the children to reflect upon our similarities and differences and to celebrate who we are as individuals and as part of cultures. After a quick visit to the Child Care Resource and Referral, Jayne came back armed with books and resources to help us in this important journey of discovery with the children.
To ensure that the children understood their own similarities and differences, they used self portrait mirrors to look at their own faces and were provided white pieces of paper and pencils in order to draw their own visions of themselves.
Learning about different types of food is a great way to introduce different cultures. Here, some examples of different types of breads are introduced to begin this journey
Multicultural puppets are a fun way to introduce hair types, clothing types and skin colours.

A Little Lesson in Scaffolding
With the addition of several new little faces here at the center, our older children are learning all sorts of lessons about teaching children younger than themselves, showing empathy to those who are new and unsure, as well as helping those new children know about boundaries, rules and guidelines.

As part of the program we offer here at the center, the children learn these skills which are in keeping with Lev Vygotsky's theory which includes the concept of "scaffolding", in which younger, less experienced children learn about life from older, more experienced peers and adults.
Here are a few simple pictures of scaffolding in action:

Staff Changes, New Faces & Welcome to Guy
With the expansion of the center to include the Out of School Care Program - lovingly named The Big Kids Club -by the Big Kids, we are accepting new friends to the center, big kids, little kids and adults. There has also been some slight changes in the staffing. Kim has now moved into the role of "Child Care Operations Supervisor", we wish her all the best in her new position. We will also be hiring another full time staff person in September to work in the Out of School Care.
In the child care center we have 5 new friends joining us - Liam, Maya, Alyssa, Laurel & Declan. We look forward to building many memories and "shining moments" with all of our new friends and their families.

The end of SPACE!
We have been working on Space for a while now... We have learned about the solar system, planets, space life and much more. With each topic that we learn about there is always one big project that we all work together on to wrap it up. This time we made our very own planet! With alot of team work it turned out to be a masterpiece!
